Review by George Norman (Cybersecurity Editor)

You should get the Iridium web browser if you agree with the following two statements: I like Chrome’s ease of use, versatility and speed; but I also take my security and privacy seriously and I don’t like that Chrome calls home to Google and that Google Search tracks my online searches.

The Iridium Browser Team took Google’s Chromium and used it as the basis for the Iridium web browser. Since it is based on Chromium, Iridium is very similar to Google Chrome. It’s just as fast, it’s just as easy to use, it also lets you use extensions, it also lets you sync into your account and sync your data across platforms.

The main change the Iridium Browser Team implemented refers to security and privacy. They enhanced the security to the maximum extent possible and enhanced the privacy in key areas: automatic data transmission is blocked, the default search engine is DuckDuckGo. I remind you that DuckDuckGo is a search engine that puts the emphasis on protecting your privacy.

Iridium is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (openSUSE, Ubuntu). If you want to use the browser on any of these platforms, you can easily download it and quickly get it up and running.
Iridium is free and open source software. So if you want to get the source code and play around with it, you’ll be glad to know that you can get the complete source code.

By default, Iridium opens a blank page when you launch it. Also by default, Iridium accesses DuckDuckGo when you open a new tab. Speaking about DuckDuckGo, Iridium uses it as the default search engine. From a visual point of view, Iridium is just like Chrome. It has the same minimalist interface, it features the same customization features. Iridium is just like Chrome from a functionality point of view also. It features the same settings, it is just as fast.

Iridium is a good choice for people who take security and privacy seriously. It’s like Google Chrome, but with enhanced security and privacy.

Pros

Iridium is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It is very easy to get Iridium up and running on a Windows PC. Iridium’s interface looks just like Chrome’s interface; so if you’ve used Chrome in the past, you will immediately feel at home. Iridium provides access to the same settings, features, and functions as Google Chrome. The key difference is that Iridium puts the emphasis on security and privacy. Iridium is free and open source software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
